Between Lounge Reborn and its… SoSoDisco

On Friday, August 7, Wicker Park’s previously best kept secret, Between Boutique Café, will be reborn as Between Lounge with the introduction of its first Friday night weekly, SoSoDisco. A departure from usual Wicker Park fare, ranging from electro, Baltimore club, and indie rock parties, SoSoDisco seeks to set the standard for a new generation of creative, boundary pushing events in Chicago.

Aptly named, SoSoDisco will recreate the irresistibly contagious, hip-gyrating vibe of 70s and 80s disco parties. Organized by DJs, Tim Zawada and Alex “Xander” Pyatetsky, SoSoDisco was born out of an insatiable demand for disco influenced music from Chicago audiences

The grand launch party will feature music industry legend Lono Brazil as guest DJ. Originally, a founding house music pioneer, Lono eventually managed the likes of The Beastie Boys and The Pharcyde to worldwide notoriety. More recently, Lono is the man behind the wildly popular monthly, Disco Unusual Social Club, at Danny’s and owner of Cottage Grove Records.

The Scoop

Previously, Between has been recognized as “Chicago’s only Valentine ’s Day Destination” and fostered the rise of 2009 Top Chef contestant, Radhika Desai. Soon after the conclusion of the series, Desai departed from Between to pursue other interests while owner, Carl Anderson, decided to recreate the cafe as a proper lounge and nightlife establishment. True to its name, the new Between will focus on promoting against-the-grain events while staying genuine to its Wicker Park roots.

With regard to the change, Anderson says, “A lot of people recognize Between as a classy, sensual date spot. And it is. There’s a reason we have an 80% female clientele. Now, in addition to that, we want people to recognize of Between as a place to come for dancing, drinking and partying. We want Between to be sensual and fun without getting cheesy, and that’s exactly how it’s going to be.”

Promoter and resident DJ, Tim Zawada explains, “When Carl told us his nightlife vision for Between, we knew we’d be able to attract a diverse crowd from all over the city to an authentic 70s/80s disco party. You’ll still hear that Chicago-House style, but we’re looking forward to giving some amazing DJs a chance to dust off those rare disco gems.”

Pyatetsky adds, “This is the perfect event for the new Between. It’s a dress-how-you-wish party, but if you feel like looking good on a Friday night in Wicker Park, you’re in the perfect place.” With regard to the music, Pyatetsky says, “We already have an army of raging disco fans. Some people have confused ideas about what disco is and isn’t, which is ok, because once they hear it, they’re hooked within 35 seconds.”
